US and UK Warn of Substantial Digital Visa Data Breach in Somali Nation

Approximately 35,000 individuals may be impacted, warns the United States embassy

A significant security compromise in Somalia's digital visa application system may have exposed private data associated with numerous thousands of applicants, involving American nationals, the US embassy in the Somali nation has alerted.

It said had received reliable information that "unknown cyber attackers" breached the Somali government's digital visa application portal, potentially compromising details concerning approximately 35,000 applicants.

The exposed records circulating online include names, images, dates of birth, marriage information, place of residence and email contacts, per a US embassy statement released on Thursday.

"This data breach is ongoing and potentially disclose all private information you enter into this platform," British authorities has similarly alerted travelers.

"Assess the potential threats prior to requesting an electronic visa mandatory for visiting the Somali nation."

Official Reaction

Government officials have not commented regarding the incident. But administration officials has transferred its visa service from evisa.gov.so to etas.gov.so, without offering a formal statement.

"While Embassy Mogadishu is unable to confirm whether applicant details belongs to the breach, travelers who have requested visas for a Somali e-visa could be impacted," the American announcement said.

Regional Implications

The updated visa process mandates each person traveling, including those from the self-declared republic of the breakaway region and the semi-autonomous region of the autonomous state, to apply for travel visas through digital means.

Opponents claim travellers have faced extra fees in certain regions, totaling duplicate payments.

Political Context

The self-declared republic, that proclaimed statehood in the early nineties, administers its affairs with its own institutions although it lacks internationally recognised. Mogadishu authorities asserts that this territory still constitutes its national domain.

The claimed security incident contributes to persistent conflicts concerning central government and Hargeisa concerning jurisdiction of aviation space. While federal authorities regained complete authority of territorial skies in recent years, Hargeisa administration persistently challenges the arrangement.

Recent Escalation

The dispute intensified this week after Hargeisa's chief executive the regional leader announced Somaliland would reject Somalia's e-visa and instructed that airlines must obtain permission from northern authorities when approaching their territorial skies.

Nevertheless major airlines have declined to accept travelers without Somalia's e-visa approval.

Recently, the northern region's top diplomat the foreign minister reiterated that "every person entering the breakaway region will obtain their visa at the point of entry", declaring Mogadishu's digital application process was not safe and warning that "personal information might be obtained by the hands of extremist groups" because of employing the platform.

Aviation Challenges

The stand-off has caused certain visitors destined for Somaliland stuck in transit hubs after being denied boarding because they didn't have Somalia's e-visa.

Somaliland's Civil Aviation Minister, the aviation minister, has stated to news organizations that the instructions - originally publicized in recent months - became operational on 10 November.

He said airlines that do not comply might be directed to reroute, and claimed multiple planes had been forced to change paths.

Airspace Control Conflict

Footage released by Somaliland's aviation ministry seems to demonstrate regional aviation officials giving directions to global airline crews - an action hailed internally as a demonstration of the region's independence.

But Mogadishu's air transport department maintains it retains complete jurisdictional power over the Mogadishu Flight Information Region (aviation control zone), which covers the entire country's aviation space. It has ordered every plane to disregard any instructions issued by sources besides federal authorities.

It warned that not adhering to national and worldwide air transport standards could pose aviation dangers and lead to "serious legal consequences".
