Britain and America have hammered out a major trade agreement that will maintain no tariffs on British medicine products entering the American market.

Key Provisions of the Pact

As part of the deal, the UK has committed to raise funding on drugs through the public health system. This pledge guarantees that tariffs on these crucial products will be held at nothing for a timeframe of three years.

This deal is in response to previous threats to dramatically increase tariffs on patented drug imports, with increases mentioned reaching double the cost.

"This deal between the United Kingdom strengthens the international landscape for innovative medicines and establishes much-needed balance to transatlantic medicine commerce," an announcement said.

Trade Importance

Medicines constitute one of the UK's biggest goods shipped to the America, which is by far the largest market for large companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Export figures show that in the 12 months to the end of last September, the UK shipped medicines valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This value accounted for 17.4% of British export trade in that period.

"This guarantee safeguards jobs, boosts capital expenditure and sets the stage for the UK to become a global hub for biotech and pharma," a government official commented.

Specific UK Commitments

The agreement includes several specific pledges from the UK:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will raise the cost ceiling at which it deems new therapies to be too expensive by a quarter.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a target to increase total public funding on treatments from 0.3% of the national economy to 0.6% over the following ten-year period.
  • Payback Limit: The amount manufacturers must pay back to the NHS to stay within budget will be capped at 15%. In the past, refunds topped 20%.

Recent Tensions

This agreement takes place against a long-running row between the sector and the British authorities over spending levels and NHS adoption.

The disagreement were exacerbated by arguments that US consumers were paying a premium for the identical medicines than people in the other developed nations.

Over the last 18 months, several major manufacturing plans in the UK have been paused or scrapped, while major expansions have been pledged toward US facilities.

The Science Minister stated that the NHS had to spend more on treatments, noting that its spending on drugs had decreased as a share of its overall budget over the past decade.
