The Hit Drama Confirmed for Seventh Series on BBC
The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-episode season written by the show's creator starts production in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."
The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came recently.
Fresh Obstacles for The Team
The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.
Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat corruption within the police force.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.
However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser hinted.
In a statement, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Actor Responses
The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.
Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."
"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."
Show History
Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.
The BBC haven't revealed exactly the new season will hit screens.
The finale of series six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.
However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
