The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring multiple personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her exist four distinct personas, each with unique fears and motivations. These entities can take over at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.

Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the protagonist navigating a abandoned chapel.

A World of Individual Horror

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."

The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl one after another. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice

At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large blooms growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."

After a player believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one standing might be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
