Senegal's Emerging Star Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
As I enter the room, Lamine Camara picks up a football he clings to throughout the conversation. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and raw talent won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest person to convince was not a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his career in the game. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back home,” he recalled.
A Landmark Season and Continental Breakthrough
This move set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to victory and being named best player.
A month later, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his relatives support to keep him focused.
Influences and On-Field Identity
Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to control his competitive fire, having been sent off early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.
Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions
With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.
Currently, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the main top prize down the line.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the game.
