Plans for Putin-Trump Summit Postponed Shortly Following Hungarian Capital Talks Announced

Currently exist "no preparations" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has declared.

Recently Trump stated he and the Russian president would hold talks in Budapest within two weeks to address the war in Ukraine.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the administration clarified the two had had a "positive" call and that a meeting was no longer "required".

The administration declined to provide further information on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Earlier Events

Trump had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit via telephone with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources indicated his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with insiders indicating the president had pushed him to cede significant territories of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Moscow.

Yet, on Monday the American president endorsed a truce plan endorsed by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the conflict on the existing battle lines.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he stated.

Russia has frequently resisted against pausing the present battle positions.

The Russian government was only interested in "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister stated on this week, suggesting that halting hostilities would only amount to a short-term truce.

Negotiating Stances

The "underlying reasons" of the war needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Russian diplomatic language for a range of extensive requirements that involve the recognition of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of the country – a non-starter for Ukraine and its Western allies.

Zelensky commented conversations concerning the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "doing everything" to prevent dialogue.

He further commented the only topic that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the supply of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently came ahead of rumors that the US was planning to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could theoretically target Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader asserted it was the weapons consideration that had pressured the Kremlin to engage in discussion. The talk about the weapons systems had proven to be a "strong investment" in negotiations", he remarked.
