This wounds his academic spirit, especially when he’s made to take the library’s most valuable and chilling work: the journal of adept Enoch Crane (put to death “for trafficking with the devyll in 1703”; the binding is made from his skin). Our Scooby gang examine the log, discover they could summon what Crane describes as a cunning serpent to help Arthur out with his extortion dilemma – and devote the remaining story facing the fallout. The dragon will undoubtedly remove those problematic neighborhood criminals, but they’ll have to choose a new sacrifice annually or succumb to the dragon’s wrath. As our protagonist states: “You invoke terrible forces, all you get is further monstrosities.”

Narrative Dexterity and Inventive Breadth

Moving through four decades, Hill also moves with effortless ease through various literary forms: as the allies endeavor to address the circumstances they find themselves in by, through diverse methods, selecting clearly malevolent individuals to sacrifice, or seeking means to kill the dragon themselves, we transition from thriller to shadowy tale, black-ops torture to love story to fright. One particularly memorable shift was to a quest story, deep in the caves below Cornwall, a segment sprinkled with JRR Tolkien that was gloriously terrifying.

A Detailed Tapestry of Dread and Hope

We encounter trolls – the classic variety and digital trolls, properly scary and expertly realized. There are magical swords and treacheries, heart-stopping scenes of courage and ones of dreadful evil, both mortal and supernatural. This is a remarkable achievement: a horror novel that is chiefly a tribute to the imagination, and to devotion and companionship. “We longed for a tale to embrace and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says the wealthy student as the companions gather at the table, preparing to summon their dragon into being with the strength of their collective will.
