The saga started with a solitary photograph, possibly the most impactful ever taken of a royal family member.

Present was the Duke of York, arm-in-arm a female youth, while a companion grinned knowingly in the backdrop.

Lacking that photograph, taken at a gathering in 2001, few would have credited the assertions of a teenager who declared she was trafficked across the Atlantic and compelled to have brief intimate contact with a member of the royal bloodline?

A strange, revealing gesture by someone who had overtly stated to have not heard of her, asserted he could not have had intimate contact with her, and yet provided millions of monarchical resources to avert a protracted court action.

Over a Decade of Controversy

In this context, conversations of the royal family acting firmly to distance themselves from Andrew are inaccurate. This controversy has continued for the largest portion of 15 years since that image, and a further photo of Andrew walking congenially with a convicted sex offender came to light.

• Arrogance: For what duration did his siblings, perhaps even his relatives, realize that Andrew was so self-entitled?
• Problematic Connections: They must have known, if his aides and the law enforcement were fulfilling their roles, that he had some deeply disreputable companions given he openly invited them to estates.
• Monetary Excess: If the family did not know about his intimate behaviors, they certainly knew about his extravagance with taxpayer funds.

Travel were listed in royal annual reports: chopper transfers from the palace to a sporting venue and back again in time for dining, private flights instead of scheduled services, all for the convenience of "Airmiles Andy".

Existence of Entitlement

Additionally the arrogance which demanded respect when he entered a room or the supreme obsession about his honorifics used on his official documents in messages to his personal acquaintances.

He could get away with it while his parent, who strangely spoiled him, was still living. The Queen did at least remove him of official roles and military positions in the aftermath of his catastrophic and, as revealed, untruthful television interview six years ago.

Recent Developments

It was only in the last 14 days that events progressed rapidly, following the release of biographical works giving more disturbing particulars of his actions and that of his associates.

Further disclosures have again exposed Andrew's thinking that he could avoid being untruthful about his interaction with a disgraced individual.

Society (and the press) were far more perceptive of the royals. There was not a single person of any significance to defend him, a consequence of all those years of presumption.

Royal Worries

The more astute family members understood that. The key objective is to transfer the crown, if not as previously at least complete and unblemished.

For generations the last 190 years trying to overcome the reputation of previous monarchs, showing they are valuable, dutiful and responsive to their citizens.

His actions endangered all that in peril in an age when respect and privacy is no longer sufficient.

The Fallout

Ultimately, the notoriously indecisive sovereign was pressured further. There was little choice. The institution had surrendered command of the narrative.

Presently the stripping of honorifics and the persistent and life-long social disgrace that will afflict Andrew most severely.

• Reduction: Reduced to just a private citizen
• Prior Instance: The primary member to lose his designations in contemporary era
• Military Service: Particularly hurtful given his role in the conflict

He remains a counsellor of state, theoretically able to stand in for the monarch, and he is still eighth in line to the monarchy, but none of these will ever occur.

Coming Developments

Will people he encounters still defer to him? Will they still forget themselves and call him Your Highness? Would they say Andrew,

Of course, he is not moving to an ordinary town, but to the monarchy's large grounds at a royal residence.

In that place, he will be provided by the monarch with one of the royal residences and given some form of financial support.

This is not his previous residence, where he paid a minimal rent for more than 20 years, and the area is a bit far, but even so it may not be sufficiently removed.

Outstanding Concerns

Matters remain unresolved. There are still files in the hands of American legislators to be revealed.

• Monetary Probe: Or investigate the waste of taxpayer funds
• Judicial Potential: There may even be a criminal probe into his behavior

Maybe for the present the reputational impact to the monarchy is limited. The statement from the royal household was clearly that the removal of honorifics was what the king, and notably other senior royals, sought.

Altered Approach

An end to illusion that Andrew was making the choice himself. And, significantly, the brief communication showed plainly that the monarchy were siding with the victim's account of incidents.

Additionally, for the premiere occasion they ultimately showed consideration for the survivors: "These actions are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the reality that he maintains his innocence of the accusations against him."

In the end it is arrogance, self-interest and indolence that will destroy the crown. In his stupidity, personal excess and greed, Andrew gives the impression never to have grasped that reality.
