Fall Classic Game 7 Attracts Over 50 Million Viewers Across the United States, Canadian and Japan Markets.

The nail-biting 11-inning contest that saw the Los Angeles Dodgers overcome the Toronto Blue Jays by one run drew a total 51 million spectators in the United States, Canada, and Japanese territories. MLB stated this marks the highest-rated Fall Classic finale since the 1991 showdown featuring the Twins and Atlanta Braves.

Broadcast Viewership Breakdown

Last Saturday’s epic contest averaged over 27 million audience members on Fox Sports networks, Fox Deportes and Fox’s digital services. According to ratings data, it was the second highest-rated broadcast of the previous week.

It also stands as the top-rated World Series game after the 2017 edition Game 7 between the Dodgers and Houston Astros, which averaged 29.07M. This represents a sixteen percent increase over the previous Game 7 featuring the Washington Nationals and Houston Astros, which attracted 23.19 million viewers.

In the weekly rankings, the sixth game ranked 4th, the fourth game ranked seventh, Game 5 was 8th, and the third game landed in thirteenth place.

Global Viewership Numbers

In Canada, the game drew 11.6M viewers on Sportsnet and the French-language TVA Sports. This was the most-watched English-language broadcast in Canada after the 2010 edition Winter Olympics.

In Japan, where the deciding game started at 9 p.m. in the local time zone, it drew 12M. This followed last Friday’s Game 6 – in which World Series Most Valuable Player Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed one run in six frames – averaged 13.1M viewers, making it the most-watched World Series game on a sole broadcaster in the country.

Series Averages and Trends

The entire seven-match World Series averaged over 15.7 million viewers on Fox, a two percent rise from the previous year’s Dodgers-Yankees matchup. This marks the first time since 2015 and ‘16 that the Fall Classic has seen audience growth for two consecutive years.

Counting the opening game telecast on the Univision network, the total US average was 16.1 million. The overall World Series average in Japan was 9.7 million and 8.1M in Canada.

The full playoffs on Fox and its sister channels averaged over 8 million viewers, an eight percent rise over the previous year and the network’s best playoff ratings after the 2017 season.

Major League Baseball stated that the Fall Classic was broadcast in over 200 countries and territories by 44 broadcasting partners in sixteen different tongues.
