Barry Manilow Scheduled for a Procedure for a Lung Cancer Diagnosis.

Barry Manilow announced that he received a diagnosis with cancer of the lung and will be having surgery.

Early-Stage Diagnosis

The 82-year-old singer, known for a string of beloved anthems from "Mandy" established him as one of pop music’s cherished showmen, will have a procedure to remove part of his lung in an effort to treat the illness, which is in its early stages.

ā€œAs my fans are aware, I recently suffered from six weeks of a bronchial infection followed by a return of another five weeks.

ā€œDespite the fact that I was past the infection and performing again in Las Vegas, my attentive medical team insisted on an MRI just to ensure that there were no issues.

ā€œThe MRI identified a tumor on my lung that needs to be removed. It’s incredible chance (and a skilled doctor) that it was caught so early.ā€

Postponed Performances

He has postponed a string of upcoming live performances, but suggested he would be back on stage by mid-February for his longstanding engagement at his Vegas home.

He continued: ā€œThe doctors do not believe it has traveled and I’m having examinations to support their conclusion. So, that’s it. No chemotherapy. Radiation therapy is off the table. Just home remedies and favorite shows.

ā€œI’m counting the days until I return to my home away from home in Las Vegas for our Valentine’s weekend concerts.ā€

Professional and Personal Journey

Manilow is now in the 16th year of a residency in Nevada. The singer has enjoyed a career spanning many years in the public eye and came out as gay in 2017, after marrying his longtime partner and manager in secret in 2014.

The duo were in a clandestine romance for over 35 years. In 2023, Manilow discussed how crucial his partner had been to him during his rise to peak fame in the 1970s.

ā€œAs my career exploded, it was just hectic. And, you know, going back to an lonesome hotel suite, you can find yourself in a lot of difficulty if you, you know, you’re by yourself evening after evening,ā€ he said.

ā€œBut I found my partner right around when it was exploding. And I didn’t have to go back to those empty hotel rooms. I had somebody to cry with or to share joys with.

ā€œI wish that young people don’t have to go back to those hotel rooms by themselves, because you can make poor choices. I never did. But it was pretty lonely until I met Garry. And then it was a shared adventure.ā€
