Barry Manilow Scheduled for a Procedure for a Lung Cancer Diagnosis.
Barry Manilow announced that he received a diagnosis with cancer of the lung and will be having surgery.
Early-Stage Diagnosis
The 82-year-old singer, known for a string of beloved anthems from "Mandy" established him as one of pop musicās cherished showmen, will have a procedure to remove part of his lung in an effort to treat the illness, which is in its early stages.
āAs my fans are aware, I recently suffered from six weeks of a bronchial infection followed by a return of another five weeks.
āDespite the fact that I was past the infection and performing again in Las Vegas, my attentive medical team insisted on an MRI just to ensure that there were no issues.
āThe MRI identified a tumor on my lung that needs to be removed. Itās incredible chance (and a skilled doctor) that it was caught so early.ā
Postponed Performances
He has postponed a string of upcoming live performances, but suggested he would be back on stage by mid-February for his longstanding engagement at his Vegas home.
He continued: āThe doctors do not believe it has traveled and Iām having examinations to support their conclusion. So, thatās it. No chemotherapy. Radiation therapy is off the table. Just home remedies and favorite shows.
āIām counting the days until I return to my home away from home in Las Vegas for our Valentineās weekend concerts.ā
Professional and Personal Journey
Manilow is now in the 16th year of a residency in Nevada. The singer has enjoyed a career spanning many years in the public eye and came out as gay in 2017, after marrying his longtime partner and manager in secret in 2014.
The duo were in a clandestine romance for over 35 years. In 2023, Manilow discussed how crucial his partner had been to him during his rise to peak fame in the 1970s.
āAs my career exploded, it was just hectic. And, you know, going back to an lonesome hotel suite, you can find yourself in a lot of difficulty if you, you know, youāre by yourself evening after evening,ā he said.
āBut I found my partner right around when it was exploding. And I didnāt have to go back to those empty hotel rooms. I had somebody to cry with or to share joys with.
āI wish that young people donāt have to go back to those hotel rooms by themselves, because you can make poor choices. I never did. But it was pretty lonely until I met Garry. And then it was a shared adventure.ā
