Arne Slot Insists He Is Safe and Retains Liverpool's Support After PSV Eindhoven Defeat
The Liverpool head coach conceded that it's expected for questions to be raised about his future following another convincing defeat versus the Dutch champions.
Liverpool suffered their 9th defeat in 12 matches, marking the club's poorest run after being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were outplayed by the Eredivisie title holders on a punishing evening at Anfield.
“I am feeling safe, I am OK, I've received a lot of support from above,” the coach stated.
“It's important to turn it around and earn three points of course but when you're coaching a team and not doing well then it is normal that people question you.”
He noted, “I am OK with my situation. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a difficult position but it is about time that we improved our results.”
Talks with The Board
When asked to expand on his discussions with the Liverpool hierarchy, Slot explained:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive for the squad and for me and we discuss these matters but they don’t call me all the time of the day to say they trust me.”
He mentioned, “Through standard conversations we have I feel the belief. However I've not talked to them since this defeat so far so let’s see.”
Familiar Problems and Squad Response
The manager lamented familiar weaknesses from his Liverpool side in their Champions League loss, namely missed opportunities and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was blunter in his evaluation of the current crisis.
“I don’t have the answers. Honestly, I do not. I’m saying that to everyone,” Jones remarked.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don't have to wait to reflect. I’m past feeling anger inside. I've reached the stage now where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He went on, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the side I follow. I support them, and I’ve seen this club for years.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Reds side experiencing a period like this with outcomes this poor.”
He stated, “However we still have that badge on our chest. And as long as that badge is taken away, we will always compete.”
“We will attempt to bring this squad return to where it needs to be, demonstrate to all once more what this club is about and why people call it the greatest side in the planet.”
“However currently, we're in trouble and it needs to change.”
