A Pair of Cuba-bound Aid Sailboats Listed Unaccounted For subsequent to Departing the Coast of Mexico.
A extensive search and recovery mission is currently under way in the Caribbean region for a duo of missing sailboats carrying relief goods journeying from Mexico to Havana.
Maritime Search and Rescue Operations Deployed
Mexico has dispatched naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting at least nine crew members, as stated by a official statement.
The ships had been scheduled to make landfall in the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their docking, the navy said.
The Situation of Relief to the Island
Cuba has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the island struggles through multiple nationwide blackouts.
"The captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and each boat are outfitted with suitable navigational gear and signalling equipment," an official for the convoy commented.
The nine individuals on board are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their consular staff.
"We are working closely with the authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.
Earlier Humanitarian Mission
Earlier in the week, the government in Havana widely celebrated and officially received another boat that had transported a significant amount of donated goods to the nation.
That ship, called "a new Granma" following the name of the yacht in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, cycles and provisions.
Broader Geopolitical Backdrop
Charity groups and individuals have primarily led efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a energy blockade on the country came into effect.
Global bodies have since raised alarms about ""severe" supply shortages, with more than fifty thousand operations cancelled in Cuba because of energy rationing.
Political pressure have been ramped up in recent months, with remarks from different officials emphasizing the delicate situation regarding diplomatic ties.
Responding to recent statements, a senior Cuban official insisted that "the political system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."
Accounts suggest that initial phases of talks had begun, although their present status remains not publicly known.
The naval forces stated it was pledged to using every available asset at its reach to discover the sailboats and ensure the security of the sailors.
To date, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
